KUALA LUMPUR, THURS:
The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) acted within its rights to block access to Malaysia Today news website.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said the commission was just exercising its powers as provided for under the Communications and Multimedia Act.
"Everyone is subjected to the law, even websites and blogs," he said at the Parliament lobby today, adding that the government did not have any intention to curtail the freedom of expression.
"However, when you publish defamatory contents, it is only natural for action to be taken," he said.
MCMC had instructed all Internet service providers to block access to Malaysia Today following complaints from the public regarding offensive comments posted on the website.
Despite the measure, visitors can still access the site via mirror websites and foreign-based DNS.
Deputy Energy, Water and Communications minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said he was unaware of MCMC's actions.
"MCMC did not brief me, but they might have briefed the minister," he said, adding that minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor is currently in Bali and is expected to be back tomorrow.
Information minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said although he was aware of the action taken against Malaysia Today, noted that it does not come under his ministry's jurisdiction.
